The Founding Fathers were well aware of the messy interplay of the secular state (kings/parliaments)and that of the church and faith. The failures of Cromwell and the English civil war was fresh in the 18th century memory.
Hence they designed the Establishment clause of the 1st amendment not so much to wall off the secular state from matters of faith and belief, but to protect faith and expression there of, from excessive involvement and management from the secular state.
The egregious violation and over-step of the SC and same sex marriage codifies into civil law, with penalties attached, directed to those who would seek to have their faith and beliefs respected as public citizens. In essence the actions of the SC has more or less established the American “state” church, those willing to do the state’s bidding in matters of marriage, PCUSA, UCC, UU, and those who do not. The secular state has chosen religious “winners” and losers.
As I have stated many times, the current PCUSA is another branch of the secular state in matters of property, polity and practice. Be warned the radicals who run the organization are not satisfied and will only be such when God is removed from both the church and the public square to be replaced by their “queer” confessional construct.
