Working Notes

Most Christian Churches focus on prayer during this season, especially
prayers of repentance for sin. It is a way to remind the community of faith
of its need for God’s grace. Without God’s grace made available to us by the
atoning death of Jesus on the cross, we would be lost. As the powerful words
of the hymn,, _Rock of Ages_, puts it so clearly:
_Nothing in my hands I bring,
_ Simply to Thy cross I cling;
_Naked, come to Thee for dress, _
_ Helpless, look to Thee for grace;_
_Foul, I to the fountain fly; _
_ Wash me, Saviour or I die._
This lesson has much to teach us about the season of Lent. But we must
always be careful to remember there is NOTHING that can be “kept or thrown
away” that will earn God’s love. His love comes to us by grace ALONE.
