Presbyterian Disaster Assistance responds to Turkey earthquake
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, August 19, 1999
$100,000 has been sent today for the immediate purchase of tents, medical supplies, lanterns, food, and other humanitarian relief items. $50,000 has come from funds designated for International Disasters and Emergencies and $50,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing.
The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), our long time partner in the region, is sending a staff specialist and the MECC to appraise the situation. Their principal task will be to meet with a church committee which has considerable experience in the sphere of refugee assistance. Over the years, this committee has worked closely with MECC. We also have friends in the region who are willing to help in the response.
PDA has established a special designated account (#9-2000142-Turkey relief) for those wishing to support the relief efforts.
As additional information is received, it will be posted to http://pda.pcusa.org.
