The Forgotten Man of Christmas
Reviewed by Stephen G. Brown, November 28, 2000
There is a man in the Christmas story who is only briefly mentioned, who seems to play a minor role and who is often forgotten. However, the importance of his role in the history of mankind cannot be overstated. He is Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. He was chosen by God to perform one of the most incredible tasks imaginable – to be mentor to the Saviour of the world.
Howard Edington has beautifully illuminated the forgotten man of Christmas. Dr. Edington is a master in communicating the gospel from his pulpit at the First Presbyterian Church of Orlando. His writing skills are on par with his oratory abilities. As you read his book you feel as though he is speaking to you directly.
Little is said about Joseph in the Bible. In order to fill in some of the blanks, Edington has sections of the book printed in italics that he calls “How it must have been.” These sections imagine the kind of person Joseph was, how he acted and what he said. Using his vivid but realistic imagination, Edington brings the character of Joseph alive in our hearts and minds.
The Forgotten Man of Christmas provides a wonderful opportunity for the reader to vividly imagine the people and events surrounding the birth of Christ. But foremost it provides a wonderful opportunity for the reader to gain some understanding of who Jesus is and what it means to have a personal relationship with him.
This book is a wonderful addition to one’s own library or as a gift to a friend this Christmas.
