The Bible teaches us that one of the false gods vying for the allegiance of God’s people was Molech. Molech was a Canaanite underworld god. Those who worshiped Molech sometimes burned their infant children as human sacrifices. God’s people are commanded not to do this. Leviticus 18:21 tells us “You shall not give any of your children to devote them by fire to Molech, and so profane the name of your God.” These sacrifices took place in the Hinnom valley, just outside of Jerusalem, the city God chose that his name would be there. When I pilgrimaged to Israel my group visited the Hinnom valley, within sight of the temple mount. Here is a holy place and an unholy place, close together geographically, yet vastly far apart in holiness and godliness.
