The only thing that was disappointing about going to see The Song was that my husband and I were literally the only people in the theater.
Please, go see this film. The Song is exactly the kind of honest, authentic, artistically-excellent God-honoring film Christians should be voting for with their ticket dollars. Not only is it filled with great original music, solid acting and beautiful cinematography, the story is authentic, believable and makes you think. And normally, I’m not a fan of narration, but Jed’s voice-overs of passages from Song of Solomon, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs set a tone of poetry and music that fit perfectly with the contrasting settings of both the rock star tour and the vineyard.
The Song takes the story of Solomon and sets it in a modern-day context. Jed King (Alan Powell) is the son of legendary country singer David King and his second wife, Bethany (the modern versions of David and Bathsheba). The opening to the movie was a quick summary of David’s affair and their marriage and birth of their legitimate son together. Fast forward years later and Jed is struggling to make it as a singer/songwriter living in the shadow of his father until he meets Rose (Ali Faulkner) who is from Jordan Vineyards, in Sharon, KY — all a little too on-the-nose for my husband, but I thought it was a great nod to the biblical language of Song of Solomon that would connect with those familiar with the book, but go right over the head of those who aren’t.
