Every month, on the third Tuesday at 2 Eastern, I convene a national conference call to discuss the latest news and developments in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Please join me this Tuesday if you would like to hear The Layman’s perspective on:
- The PCUSA’s 2014 statistical report – highlighting anomalies and oddities that leave some unanswered questions
- The Presbyterian mission agency’s financial report, forecasting and the impact on global missions
- The Moderator’s remarks to the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board
- The advent of church “splants” – churches that achieve a majority vote but fail to achieve the super-majority votes required by some presbyteries for dismissal, resulting in the majority of the congregation splitting from the PCUSA to form a new church in the same community in affiliation with another Presbyterian denomination
- Update on amendment voting in presbyteries and discussion of San Gabriel’s as an exemplar of theological shift
- Update on the ongoing agony of congregations “stuck” in presbyteries with no policies, policies under review or policies that have now been amended so as to make it virtually impossible to leave
If you’ve got a particular item of concern you would like to hear addressed, please send them via email to laymanletters@layman.org or via Twitter @carmenlaberge or @preslayman.
Call 615-280-8014 and then enter the code 501822 at 2 p.m. (EST) on May 19 to hear the latest news. After the call, the content is posted as a podcast on Layman.org.

These are truly historic times at PCUSA. It will be interesting and revealing to observe from a distance what’s happening in Louisville. And witness its wacky unfolding political actions in the future. It’s like watching a political race for US Senate or President. Sadly, we’re not dealing with political trickery or new product lines like ‘a new Chevy,’ or ‘new improved Tide soap. We’re dealing with the eternal, unchanging Word of God and saving souls.
There is a word for what is now apparent in the leadership of the PC(USA)
and it is called PANIC. The actions are based on an awareness that all their plans are on sinking sand just as the parable suggests.
How can pastors act and think in the midst of this awakening.
Another word comes to mind that many are willing to act on: COMPROMISE.
Every person, pastor and member, has to decide to to follow Christ without compromise.
I do not advocate either panic nor compromise.
Trusting God, following God precludes compromise and panic.
Instead:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And don’t lean on your own understanding,
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”
Prov 3:5,6
“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sit down with My Father on His throne”.Rev. 3:21
Don’t loose patience, keep drawing near to JESUS, submit to the Holy Spirit, and God’s power and wisdom will lead you.
