In 40 plus years of ministry I was invited to school board meetings, city council meetings and the opening of the day of three different legislatures to offer the prayer. For the state legislatures I was paid mileage, lunch money and a small stipend. I gave up doing this 25 years ago. I offered short 1 minute prayers that were ignored by most in attendance. I could care less if the prayers are legal. I have noted some really grating sermons within prayers offered by some “for the moment” chaplains. Chaplains do serve a function, but we are long way from Peter Marshall.
