I, however, did not like God’s Not Dead (see that review here), and, though I thought it was much better, was still disappointed with Do You Believe?
My main issue? Again … it just wasn’t believable. I’ll go back to the same word I used with God’s Not Dead – contrived. The first 3/4 of the movie, it was pretty good. It was very overtly evangelical, definitely felt like it was made for a Christian-only audience, but the story lines were more interesting, the characters had more depth, and they wrestled more with issues, rather than having quick-and-easy pat answers for everything. There were a few hokey lines and some Christianese, but still, overall, I had hope for it.
But then, we got to the last act … and I literally said, “Oh, come on!” twice out loud in the theater. It just was too over-the-top ridiculous. In an attempt to connect all the stories together into a nice little bow of a happy ending, the movie completely lost me.
Again, I’m disappointed. Again, as Christians, we can overlook the flaws in the story line and get the message that if we say we believe, we need to live it out. But again, I’m not going to be taking any of my non-Christian friends to see it.
