The Board of Pensions (BOP) of the Presbyterian Church (USA) elected a new president — Frank Clark Spencer of Charlotte, N.C. – during Friday morning’s meeting, held in Philadelphia, Pa.
Spencer is expected to be confirmed at the PCUSA’s 221st General Assembly, meeting June 14-21 in Detroit, Mich., and will assume his duties as BOP president on July 1. He succeeds Robert W. Maggs, who retired following 15 years service as president of the BOP.
“We will be optimistic,” Spencer said following his election. “It’s about the next 300 years, not the last 300.”

A BOP press release quoted Spencer as saying, “I am honored to have this opportunity to lead the Board of Pensions in its mission to provide benefits and assistance to those who serve the church, especially during such times of change for our denomination.”
Spencer has 28 years of experience in finance and commercial real estate development, and spent 15 years in healthcare real estate with Cogdell Spencer Inc., according to the press release.
He entered Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte in 2011 as a candidate for the Master of Divinity degree, and he is expected to complete his degree in 2014.
Spencer has been the president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity in Charlotte since 2012.
He is a ruling elder at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, and also has served as chairman of the Board of Directors for the Montreat Conference Center and on the NEXT Church National Strategy Team. He has been a member of the BOP’s board of directors for two years.
The Board of Pensions is the corporate body that administers the church pension and benefits program and the Assistance Program. It is governed by an independent board of directors, nominated by the General Assembly Nominating Committee and elected by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
