Judge who posted Ten Commandments elected Alabama’s chief justice

Judge Roy Moore, who aroused the ire of liberals for posting the Ten Commandments in his courtroom, was elected chief justice of Alabama on Tuesday.
“Remember the one responsible for it all, and that’s God,” Moore told supporters at a senior citizens center in Gadsden, where an alternative Christian rock group and a church orchestra from Mobile entertained hundreds of supporters.
“This campaign is about morality,” he said. “It’s about the loss of morality in our state and nation.”
According to The Birmingham News, Moore’s opponent said the Ten Commandments govern her personal life and she relies on the Constitution for her rulings as a judge.
The News also quoted Larry Powell, a political science professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as saying that Moore stood out because of his concentration on religious themes.
“He was able to identify with the single issue. That simplifies things,” Powell said. “He is sort of like the poster child for the court’s overly restrictive view of religion for those who hold those views.”
