New Wineskins leaders call the church to prayer
The Layman Online, June 29, 2006
WICHITA, Kansas – In this time of crisis within the Presbyterian Church (USA), the New Wineskins Initiative leadership team Thursday asked Presbyterians, and especially those within the association of New Wineskin congregations, to enter into “21 Days of Prayer” for the church.
“We are far beyond the need for mere renewal in the PCUSA,” said Tom Edwards, the group’s coordinator. “The PCUSA will need true revival to continue to exist, and healing for the church comes through prayer,” he said. “Many have called for various seasons in our divisions and struggles; few acknowledge how deeply fractured our fellowship truly is. In the midst of our current crisis, much prayer is needed.”
David Githii, moderator of the 4.5-million Presbyterian Church of East Africa, recently told a New Wineskins congregation that “prayer is the only hope for the PCUSA.”
As preparations continue for the second New Wineskins convocation next month in Tulsa, they have prepared a “call to guided prayer” that they say is structured in such a way as to take “just a few moments or to be used throughout the day to meditate on God. Each day’s entry is anchored in Scripture and provides food for the soul.”
The convocation will be hosted by Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. Registration for the July 19-22 event may be made at the registration Web site or the New Wineskins Initiative Web site.
