Burge resigns as executive director
of Presbyterian Lay Committee
The Layman, September 11, 2008
Citing familial reasons, Charles F. Burge has tendered his resignation as executive director of the Presbyterian Lay Committee (PLC), with regrets.
“The last eight months have been extraordinarily busy and difficult ones for me and my family,” says Burge. “While I appreciate greatly the work of the Lay Committee, my family and I have found that living apart has taken its toll, and believe that for now the Lord desires that I reside with them in Florida.”
Burge was called by the Lay Committee in late 2007 from Coral Ridge Ministries in Fort Lauderdale and moved to the Lenoir, N.C., office in January, leaving his wife and daughter in South Florida. From there he has been overseeing the publication of The Layman and the ministry Web site (www.www.layman.org), including a soon-to-be-released upgrade. He has reported on three Presbyterian General Assemblies – the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Presbyterian Church in America and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church – as well as the General Assembly Council, Presbyterian Global Fellowship and various renewal group events. He also hosted the PLC’s June Faith and Life Conference.
PLC Board Chair Stephen G. Brown accepted the resignation with regrets on behalf of the Lay Committee board. “I understand the burdens you and your family have endured during this period of separation. We pray for God’s blessings on you, your wife and your children.”
“It has been an honor to be associated with the ministry,” says Burge. “The Lay Committee plays a vital role in the spiritual life of the PCUSA. My prayer is that God will continue to guide and protect those associated with it for years to come.”
