Ben Lacy Rose dies at 91
The Layman Online, November 13, 2006
Dr. Ben Lacy Rose of Richmond, Va., 91, a strong proponent of Reformed theology and an unabashed witness for Christ, died today.
Rose was professor emeritus of pastoral leadership and homiletics at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. For years, he was the author of a question and answer column syndicated nationally by the denomination. The column was noted for clear, concise answers grounded in Scripture.
He had continued preaching until Oct. 26 when, after conducting a service at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond, he fell and was hospitalized.
In 1997, Rose conducted the funeral for his daughter Lucy, who was professor of preaching and worship at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. She was 50 when she died and had suffered much during treatment for cancer. Rose posed and answered her question: “Why doesn’t God take me home?”
Rose, who was the pastor of several churches before he became seminary professor, said, “God needed somebody to witness to a generation of preachers how a Christian faces pain and death, and gains the victory through Jesus Christ.”
To the end, Rose was faithful in his own witness. In 1997, he published a tract expressing his concern about the “unity in diversity” movement in the PCUSA. T.u.l.i.p.: The Five Disputed Points of Calvinism was among his many books and articles.
