World Vision relief goal for Turkey is $2 million

SEATTLE – World Vision has embarked on a $2 million aid effort for survivors of the devastating August 17 earthquake in Turkey. Pharmaceuticals and medical supplies will be airlifted next week. Blankets, winter-weight clothing and shoes will be sent by ship to arrive before the onset of cold weather.
The supplies will be distributed in coordination with World Relief, World Vision’s partner in this effort. World Vision’s Canadian office is organizing the $700,000 medical supplies effort.
Meanwhile, World Vision is sending from the United States $1 million worth of winter-weight children’s clothing, boots and blankets, due to arrive by mid-September. “People who’ve lost everything in the quake will need clothes and blankets when the weather turns cold in November,” said Roger Schrage, who has traveled many times to Turkey while doing relief work for World Vision in Georgia, Armenia and the Balkans.
The clothing and boots were donated new by the manufacturers and already are in World Vision warehouses in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles. The blankets also were donated new. Because of the high cost of sorting, packaging and shipping donations of relief items from the public, World Vision is not seeking additional relief supplies. However, $100,000 in cash is needed to cover the cost of shipping and distributing these goods. Additional funds are being sought to assist World Relief’s efforts.
