Three presbyteries vote in favor of Amendment 01-A
The Layman Online, March 11, 2002
The votes of three presbyteries gave opponents of the “fidelity/chastity” ordination standard in the Book of Order a brief hurrah on March 9.
The three presbyteries – Grand Canyon, Miami and Michigan – voted for Amendment 01-A. A fourth, Indian Nations, registered a tie vote, which counts as a vote against the proposal to delete G-6.0106b from the Book of Order and to declare that homosexual activity is not sinful.
The votes by the four presbyteries runs the tally to 119-44 against Amendment 01-A, which had already been defeated by well more than a majority of the presbyteries.
Seventy-three percept have voted against the proposed amendment, the largest margin to affirm the “fidelity/chastity” clause. The standard was originally approved in 1996-97 by 56.7 percent of the presbyteries. In 1997-98, the standard was affirmed by 66.7 percent of the presbyteries.
Only 11 presbyteries have not voted.
