Carmen Fowler LaBerge, president of the Presbyterian Lay Committee will be preaching at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church’s 35th General Assembly.
During her Friday, June 26th sermon, LaBerge will raise the question, “If we have the mind of Christ and the Spirit of Christ, do we also have the perspective of God and the kind of faith required to LOOK at and SEE the world the way He does?” Her Scripture passage will be Numbers 13:1-14:12.
The Friday night worship service will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The EPC’s General Assembly will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Orlando, Fla., from June 23-27.
“I have many friends and colleagues in the EPC and I look forward to being with them in Orlando for their General Assembly. It is always a week of spiritual refreshment and genuine Christian fellowship,” LaBerge said. Reflecting specifically on the preaching invitation she said, “When Jeff Jeremiah and Bill Dudley ask you to do something, you prayerfully say yes. They noted in our conversation that I’d be preaching in a pulpit denied to me by the PCUSA. Our readers may remember that when I served as the Executive Director of the Presbyterian Coalition my office was at First Orlando. Central Florida Presbytery refused to see that as a legitimate calling and denied my membership. Now that First Orlando is in the EPC, that barrier has been removed. Strange times we live in and strange paths we tread.”
There will be six worship services at the EPC’s assembly.
- David Swanson, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Orlando (Wednesday at 1:45 p.m.);
- Bishop Claude Alexander Jr., pastor of The Park Church in Charlotte, N.C. (Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.);
- Phil Linton, EPC Director of World Outreach (Thursday at 7:30 p.m.);
- Gordon Miller, EPC Moderator (Friday at 8:30 a.m.);
- Case Thorp, pastor of Missions and Evangelism of First Presbyterian Church in Orlando (Saturday at 8:30 a.m.).
On Thursday, June 25, from noon to 1:30 p.m., LaBerge will host one of the many Networking Luncheons held during each day’s lunch hour. She will be discussing news from the larger Presbyterian family with those who attend.
