Upon reviewing the complete list of actions by the General Assembly, it appears the list resembles a Democratic National Committee platform than that of a religious organization. Delighted our church left PCUSA earlier this year.
Is the PCUSA is schism now? Yes and no. Yes in that congregations have, will, and are in process of leaving the apostate entity. No in that this is not 1970 or 1932 or even 1735. There is no mass movement or entire blocks and chunks of the church moving at once, ala PCA in 1970-73. What is really killing the entity is the gradual, slow, but steady drip of people leaving, dying, demographic and ethnic changes that slowly bleed the organization and have for 20 years. Also vast amounts of the denomination simply going dark, pastors, churches, quit in place, withdraw, disengage at the Presbytery level. Doing work and ministry as if the Presbytery did not exist. And the money changes that accompany it for the organization. The 173 or so Presbytery business model is near collapse, and this was in place well before anti-Semitism took root in the organization. The whole marriage issues simply act as a catalyst to speed up changes that already were well in place. In 5-10 years what is known as the PCUSA will be in form of union with the UCC or discussion with the Unitarians. That is path ahead for them, only choice is do you choose to be part of that.
Putting the very real theological discussion aside for a moment the constitutional angst caused by the action of adopting the AI about marriage will be the cause of great heartache and disunity within the local church. At a local level Pastor is now pitted against Session, Members pitted against pastor because they either want to, demand they do or refuse to officiate, allow premises to be used or insist that the paid staff will have to conduct non-biblical marriages. Despite the assurance that no one will be compelled to do anything the Presbyteries will have opportunity to take over congregations where disruption is being caused from this. WOW!!!
