(By Kristin Hoppa, The Waco Tribune-Herald, Texas). A fundraising effort kicked off Saturday for El Calvario Presbyterian Church featuring a fellowship of faith, family and a little Zumba. The church is hoping to buy the property where it operates and expand its community service efforts.
“We have a vision for this property, and the vision is one of wholeness in Christ, wellness and faith,” the Rev. Susan Finck said. “Our extended community is larger and we really want to love our neighborhood, and by owning our building, we want to be able to expand and serve our larger community.”
Fundraising efforts, including games, a cakewalk and Zumba session, started Saturday at the Presbyterian church, which this year transitioned from the Presbyterian Church (USA) to the Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians denomination. Finck said in the new denomination, each congregation owns its own property, prompting the ongoing effort.
With a listed purchase price of $214,000 for the property at 2222 Dutton Ave., Finck said she hopes Saturday’s spring-themed festival will allow congregation members and others to see the vision of the church.
Finck said the church, which has about 60 members attending Sunday services, is renting the property. Parishioners also offer community services, primarily to help Hispanic community members and immigrants in Waco.
