The next steps for PCUSA renewal
November 18, 1998
In its theological declaration, “Union in Christ,” and its strategies manual, “Turning Toward the Mission of God,” the Presbyterian Coalition has given wonderful gifts to the PCUSA. The declaration is a lyric, contemporary expression of historic Christian orthodoxy. The strategies, which grow out of the declaration, identify specific vineyards where laborers are needed.
The Coalition began in 1993 as a loose alliance of individuals and organizations concerned about the issues of ordination and human sexuality. The passage of Amendment B and defeat of Amendment A, which established and upheld the “fidelity and chastity” language of the Book of Order, seemed to have met the Coalition’s organizing purpose. Indeed, after Amendment A’s defeat some Coalition members suggested that the organization disband, or at least “go into mothballs.”
Other voices prevailed. Now the organization is seeking to expand its board, hire staff, raise an ambitious budget and become a feature of the Presbyterian landscape.
The Coalition thus prepares to add its voice to the existing network of renewal organizations. Its declaration is a welcome addition to the theological publications already offered by many of these organizations. Its strategies for transformation both identify areas where much good work is being done and suggest avenues for future endeavors. As a founding member of the Presbyterian Renewal Network, the Presbyterian Lay Committee looks forward to the Coalition’s bold execution of its strategies and to its uncompromising faithfulness to the theological framework it has established.
The Coalition’s next steps will be carefully watched throughout the PCUSA. We pray that these steps will help all Presbyterians turn toward the mission of God as we recognize our union in Christ.
